ELOPEMENT GUIDES | Updated: 30th June 2025

Dreaming of a breathtaking elopement? This post is just for you!

From fairytale castles to sun-kissed coastlines and rugged mountain vistas, this guide reveals the most magical places to get married in Europe.

1. The Scottish Highlands

If you’re after moody, earthy tones, ancient castle ruins, and rugged glens, then the Scottish Highlands should 100% feature on your potential list of places to elope in Europe. Some of the best locations here are: Isle of Skye, Glencoe, Torridon, Assynt, and the Cairngorms. For such a tiny country, Scotland offers quite a diverse choice of backdrops, which is a big bonus if you’re thinking of planning out a longer trip here – most locations can be reached within just a few short hours from one another.

PRO TIP: Consider eloping in Spring or Autumn to capitalise on those lush colours, the slightly quieter roads, and the most chance of seeing the moody skies Scotland is so famous for.

2. Norway

For those of you out there who’re keen to see the Northern Lights, the Nordic countries are the place to be! The capital Oslo is a vibrant city full of rich culture, whilst coastal cities such as Bergen on the South-West offer a slower-paced experience. For the outdoor lovers, consider eloping in Tromso, Senja, or the Lofoten Islands. Depending on the time of year, you may also be in with a chance to see the elusive Northern Lights.

3. The Dolomites

The Dolomites are situated in the Northern part of Italy and were actually part of Austria until after the First World War. So, there’s quite a unique mix of rich cultures blended together. The area is dominated by endless mountain ranges, deep turquoise water filled mountain lakes, and idyllic villages. Some of the most iconic spots here are: Lago di Braies, Tre Cime di Lavaredo, Seceda, Cinque Torri, and Cadini di Misurina. It’s also worth noting that most elopement locations are inaccessible during the late Autumn through to early Spring season due to snowfall and the high elevation. So, eloping in mid-Spring through to early Autumn is best.

4. Italy

Okay, I know Italy already features on this list above, but I couldn’t leave out some other iconic spots in this gorgeous country. If you venture South from The Dolomites, you’ll soon reach the quintessential Italian landscapes. Lake Como, Tuscany, the Amalfi Coast, and Sicily all offer distinct experiences and breathtaking vistas. It can be super hot in Italy in Summer months, so if you’re eloping here then consider May – June or September – November.

5. Iceland

The land of ice and fire is truly one of the most incredible places anywhere in the world. It sits a rift between tectonic plates and experiences frequent volcanic eruptions. The Highlands are only accessible via F-Roads with a specialist off-road vehicle and only during certain times of year when it’s safe to pass. However, there loads of locations accessible all year round, such as Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach, Búdir Black Church, Arnarstapi Stone Bridge, Kirkjufell, Kvernufoss, and Stokksnes (to name a few).

6. Scotland

Outside of the Scottish Highlands, there are still loads of beautiful elopement locations. The ancient cobbled streets of Edinburgh are a firm choice if you’re keen to stay close to a major city/airport or don’t want to drive too far. In the centre of the city is the Old Town, with iconic locations such as Edinburgh Castle, The Vennel Steps, Dean Village, and Calton Hill. But, just outside of the city walls is Holyrood Park and Arthur’s Seat, which is an amazing choice if you still want those Highlands vibes. Other great choices in Scotland are Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park and the Scottish Borders.

7. Faroe Islands

Located between Iceland, Norway, and the UK, the Faroe Islands are a small group of islands dominated by fjords and cliffs. It’s nowhere near as touristy as other hotspots in Europe making it the perfect choice for couples who want go get away from it all and have more of a relaxed adventure. It’s worth accounting for extra travel time when going there because you will likely need to take a few different planes depending on where you’re coming from.

8. Madeira

Madeira is a an archipelago of 4 small islands situated in the North Atlantic just off the Northwest coast of Africa. It’s an autonomous region of Portugal and is known for its warm, tropical climate, rugged seascapes, towering cliffs, and lush green volcanic landscapes. The unique climate makes it a firm contender for an elopement all year round too! Some of the most epic locations here are Fanal Forest, Pico Do Arieiro, and Miradouro da Garganta Funda.

9. Switzerland

Switzerland is truly magical! Imagine crystal clear alpine lakes, dense ancient forests, endless meadows, and the Swiss Alps towering above you as you marry your soul mate. What more could you ask for? Travelling within Switzerland is super convenient too with the train system making hopping from a major city to a small mountain town a breeze.

10. Ireland and Northern Ireland

Think rugged sea cliffs, rich green rolling hills, and taking in the rich history and culture nestled in the cosy corner of an old pub by the fire. This is what Ireland and Northern Ireland deliver. Perhaps the most iconic destinations here are the Cliffs of Moher in the South and the Giants Causeway in the North. Each are epic in their own right, with their own unique charms. The best time to elope here would be June to October, but potentially skipping July and August because it can get incredibly busy, especially at the famous landmarks.
